First formed in 1983 by Red and some school misfits, didn't really start gigging til later on in the eighties, but soon had a cult following in Melbourne and down on the West for performing their surf punk tunes.. with a customary trAshiNg of the stage and all instruments at the end of every gig.
The punters who attended these performances were mostly coastal crew and sUrfErs. And the band were often portrayed as a bunch of very musically talents mAd surfers, who often played in their wetsuits and smashed surfboards and guitars for a stage-act!
Although having been supported by some (nowadays) big named acts ie. Magic DirT, Cosmic PsYcHos, in the past the baNd never really made it big time. Some say it was their management who didn't promote them well enough, combined with members always pissing off o/s on surf trips. The band in the early part of 2002 fizzled out because of family commitments and constant arguments between the band members and managers. But having said all this, it would not surPrise me if they reform one of these years and become cuLt surf heroes again. Red and old bass player still play around sometimes with what every drummer can come to the party!
The band only recorded 2 albums "miXing of the Senses" and "CouNtry and Eastern Music", none of which never really went anywhere apart from donations to suRf videos and films over the years. They can be bought through this site.
Over the years the band had numerous members coming in and changing around. So the sTyle of the band changed with it.. but always have a strong oceanic flavour and 60s style with an almost avant guard/sonic youth undertow.. which never really gave them a commercial edge or concertive success. I guess they never sold out and just played music for the love of it and not the moNey or the commercial highlights.
The band always supported humaN rigHts and were always the band for the after partyies at Melbourne marches and Otways protests. They were a band that supported peace, trees and no wars with like minded friends .. they were quite the band in the know in the late eighties thru the mid nineties. Then through a major personal change around 96, the band's focus turned more towards the oceaN and their base in the Otways.
New members were very coastal orientated and spent years "fearing the loathing" in the otways. It was these Las Vegas, always being the top Bill band @ big gigs and going into non-venue places and setting them up and to this day they have music there. I thinik Red see's establishments as potential alternative Live music venues - just for the band!
The band sound varied over 16 years, having personal changes more than the members of parLiamEnt, Red Whytes' tastes in music were excentric. The band sort of were bluesey industrial punk, to punk, to surf punk, to sonic youthsy/hendrixy originals to funky surf, to hardcore surf grunge latin fusion, to poppy commercial caTchY surf culture rock to psychedelic surf jazz fusion. People who have followed the band all through their past, present and future claim Inked Factor as an Australian Icon.
Members of this Aussie band perform in Torquay the THE RED SEA band or the RED WHYTE TRIO, showcasing and a mad brazilian bass player, a breath of fresh air for Red equal at last in his musical high realms. They met at the Torquay suPermArket when Redi was busking. Adelmar Rees escaping Rio DeJanero with daughter and partner... stumbled into the perfect bunch of muso's for him.
Bass Player Peter Riter (on far right) has been gigging with the Red Whyte Trio. Inked Factor will fully reform in the years to come, but for the moment, the ol' eighties band is re-bumbling back.
