Red Whyte "Goosebumps in the Midday Sun"

Red-raw with emocean, the latest compilation from Red Whyte is a sea-saw between acidic jazz and mellow meditation, inching through it's dunes of sun-inspired sound. 'Light' opens the album like pages of morning, as the transcendental soar of the word 'light' awakens like the sharp sting of a steering wave. With a digging bass riff, the song rolls the album onto a belt of jazz fusion, where Whyte's vocal abandon sails off into an undertow of steaming energy. Perhaps borrowed from the Free Jazz punctuation, the music's pulse pants frenetically, giving way to fields of indulgent languor. 'Light' then comes full circle in it's electrically charged reprise. 'Light Loop', wired with currents of sizzling metal to contrast the original piece's elemental air. With lilting uncertainty, 'Free Wind entracnes with a blend of Middle Eastern and South American flute, blowing for the meandering sitar monologue 'Lazy At Lennox' recorded at Lennox Head in March 2008. With an intermittent focus on natural sound sampling and the recreation of environmental atmospheres, Whyte's latest production draws a clear path toward many more inspiRED endeavours.

a little bit closer.....
RED WHYTE
Red`s 10th solo album is again an aclectic collection of songs .... steering away the more mellow vibe and previous album`s ambience to a more raw edged blues and roots style . all instruments played by red and all songs written by red, except a cover by 70`s london group THE STIFF KITTENS.
A little bit closer signals a maturing in both style and theme. it is an outward looking album, reflecting on family ..death and a drawing inspiration from world affairs and environmental issues. the album has a sronger pulling towards global warming, being a surfer who lives and breaths the coast, red is in tune with up to date issues and environmental protests.
less lyrically sparse with no pure instrumental tracks, a little bit closer has wide potential audience appeal. while its more commercial there is still an overall '' back yard ness '' that on an ever-modernizing surf coast of paved roads, street signs, speed humps and land releases, is endearing .
the first 6 tracks are a buzz to listen too then she winds down a tad, happy listenin`. |

Authenticity
RED WHYTE
Technical, yet creative; cool, yet extreme, dynamic Bells Beach musician Red Whyte is just as colourful as his name. If authenticity is what he seeks, then authenticity is what he has achieved with his new double album which splashes us with the very essence of surf culture, tragedy, loss, love, unity and self-reliance. Having been known to play live using his teeth, yet trained by Classical guitarist Harry Schuster, Whyte has mastered an array of techniques on a wide spectrum of instruments, including the sitar, mandolin and Swanee whistle, all of which are played with emotive skill. "Don't think you can tear me and the ocean apart" dictates Whyte in bright earnestness on initial track "Breakky Barrels", setting the album's waves in motion. Maintaining his inseparable change like a marine wind, while sound sampling of ocean waves create a mesmerising sense of reality. Amid various memorable melodies is the stellar piece 'Long Way to Johanna", describing time's apparent manner of stretching when we approach a highly sough-after place. With a hazy "do, do, do" and lilting rhythm, allusions to '50s/'60s surf pop are enlivened by searing cymbals and the Oriental tang of brass, then mellowed by Whyte's unpretentious delivery. Moved by the death of three valued people, Whyte has included odes to Bob Marley ('Freedom Fighter'); Steve Irwin ('Mr Conservationist'); and a particularly motivational elegy to surfing mate Vyasa dev Ofthesea Bartlett, son of famed surfer Charles Bartlett. "This one's for Vyasa", proclaims Whyte during the glimmering guitar intro of 'Keep On Powerin' On', where the edges of arrangement work like the angle of a wave. Drums' hypnotic trances power through shadowy hints of harmonica in a stoical procession, sounding quite like the spirit of Vyasa. Among the host of guest performers on the double album is yet another notable surfer, namely Kelly Slater, who lends his guitar playing to "Breakky Barrels" and "Surfers Jam". Later we discover wailing wa-wa chatting through the ambivalence of "Totally Torn", leading into the album's conclusion of strumming akin to liquid sun. Like a sea breeze iteself, 'Authenticity" flows through a spectrum of transitions, and it don't matter if you're red or whyte; you will love the ride, man.

On The Rocks
RED WHYTE
On The Rocks is an amazing album, different and unique from all Red Whytes' albums. 3 things in particular make this one stand out, firstly it is all instrumental, secondly it is part of a series of 4, "The Rocks Series" and thirdly it has a special theme "an aussie surf-acoustic chill out album, masquerading as a surf film maker's tribute CD". In other words, it's a collcetion of Red's songs that all end up on surf movies. An eclectic and quirky bunch of musics are to be found here on this album. A nice chill vibe to it also, and a lot of the tracks are reminiscent of the old hawaiian slack-key guitar ballads. Other instruments that feature on the C.D. are mandolin, sitar, kechapi, keyboards, dialogue and nature sounds, guitars - steel, nylon and lapsteel. There is only one guest artist (Tetsuo Keneda) on one track. With some talking from legendary surfer Michael Peterson.

Dance on Water
RED WHYTE
A true dedication to surfing this album, it was also the year (2004) Red surfed every day for a personal challenge. Songs on the album are varied in vibe probably due to half it being recorded in Byron and the other in Melbourne. Tragically ex- Inked Factor Paul Mason passed shortly after laying a few bass tracks on the album, consequently Red dedicated D.O.W. to the man. The album starts off in a Jack Johnston vibe then swings into jazzy psychedelic, to the epic title track, then to a quirky funky track then back to mellow, then up again then finishing off with some ultra ambient surf classics and las song blasts off to be followed by some funny sneaker tracks. Red does mostly all the instrumentation on the album with guest performances by female vocalists Vicki Gottliebsen and Sue McKellor, hammond organ & harp Buzz Bahlaw and violin Jera Sansom. |

Red Whyte's 6th solo album to date, this time has taken a plunge into less manually played percussion and more programmed beats, and a general tightening up of all the elements that make this multi-faceted music so dark and very light at the same time. Tranquil and soothing but very energetic and driven.
 |
A double album (with a moon theme) showcasing 29 songs, all great for putting in the car stereo for travelling. Surprisingly some real commercial radio hits from Red amongst the usual obscure tracks.
A fierce good vibe track "Creating Bliss" kicks off the album followed by nostalgic KING ISLAND surf video hit, followed by a live track that really grows on you the more you listen to it.
Features guest on The Waxing and the Waning are vocalist Rose Bygraves, and Flautist Howlin' Wind adding the cosmic and psychedelic edge to the album.
Red plays sitar, bass, guitar, harmonica, flute, percussion and vocals. Other guest instruments are didge, sax, muted trumpet, violinists and range of female harmonies.
|
The two discs are supposed to represent the two weeks before the full moon and two weeks after. Disc one is energetic, thought provoking and down the line. Disc two is sparse and of a winding down nature, apart fro the 1st track, a sitar trance techno hit that's got a Miles Davis 60's feel to it. A different kind of late night song!
Lyrics on the album are sparse, but when they eventually come, they're powerful & evocative. A groovy album with spiritual themes. Even a 2-minute song of the Dalai Lama's Geelong speech put to spacey keyboards with a crazy element of humour to it.
Possibly this multi-instrumentalist, contemporary folk, soundscape artist is changing his style away from pure acoustic into something of our times with the ever-present 60's feel!
|
 |
Red's albums of the past, including this one, have always been multi-functional as things to listen and dance to. And also soundtracks for movies and or medicinal and healing based songs.
